Ask most people to picture a great carbon store and they'll imagine a rainforest. It's the wrong picture. The largest terrestrial carbon store on the planet isn't a forest at all — it's a waterlogged, unglamorous, easily-overlooked landscape called peatland. Peatlands cover just 3% of the world's land surface, yet they hold roughly twice as much carbon as all the world's forests combined.

That makes them one of the most consequential — and most fragile — assets in the fight against climate change. And most organizations with land in their value chain have no idea whether they're sitting on one.

How a bog becomes a carbon vault

Peat forms where plant material dies faster than it can decompose. In permanently wet, oxygen-poor ground, dead vegetation doesn't fully break down — it accumulates, millimetre by millimetre, over thousands of years. A peat bog you can walk across today may represent ten thousand years of stored carbon sitting just beneath your boots.

The key word is wet. As long as the water table stays high, that carbon stays locked away. The trouble starts the moment the water leaves.

Drain a peatland and you don't just stop it storing carbon — you flip it from a sink into a sustained, decades-long source.

Why drainage is the whole game

When peat is drained — for agriculture, forestry, construction or extraction — oxygen reaches the stored organic matter and it begins to oxidize. Carbon that took millennia to accumulate is released in years. Drained peatlands are responsible for around 4% of global human-caused greenhouse gas emissions from a tiny sliver of land. Worse, a drained bog keeps emitting long after the original disturbance, and dry peat is highly flammable — peat fires can smoulder underground through a wet season and reignite.

For a business, the risk is rarely obvious on a balance sheet. It hides in a drainage decision made decades ago, a supplier's plantation on former wetland, or a site chosen without a soil-carbon screen.

What good measurement actually looks like

You cannot manage what you have not located and quantified. Credible peatland stewardship comes down to a handful of disciplined steps:

None of this is exotic. It's the same measure-manage-report loop that underpins any defensible emissions number — applied to a carbon store most inventories quietly ignore.

The opportunity hiding in the risk

Here's the part that gets missed: peatlands are as powerful on the way up as they are on the way down. Re-wetting a drained bog can stop its emissions almost immediately and, over time, return it to a sink. For organizations with degraded wetland in their footprint, restoration is one of the few nature-based levers that is both high-impact and measurable — provided you have the baseline to prove it.

That "provided" is the whole point. Restoration only counts if you can show where you started, what changed, and how you know. The bog beneath your feet is either an unquantified liability or a documented, defensible climate asset. The difference is measurement.
